So now, you need to get hired.

What’s the best approach?

You must ensure whoever is interviewing you sees that you have what it takes to be successful at the position you are applying for. The thing NOT to do is ONLY tell the interviewer that you have what it takes. You have to go one step further…

This is a straightforward approach:

1) Make sure you listen and understand the question – you can always clarify the interviewer’s question.

2) Confidently, answer the question by “telling” the interviewer that you have the focus, discipline, stamina, knowledge, and personality that it takes to get the job done.

3) “Show” that you have demonstrated these competencies in the past by GIVING REAL EXAMPLES.

4) Ask and verify that you have answered the question to the satisfaction of the interviewer.

So for example:

“So … what you are asking me is “X.” Yes, I definitely have the ability to “X. ” For example, at my last job I ran into a situation / problem where I “problem” but I was able to “resolve” because of my ability to “X” and “Y” and “Z.” Does that make sense?

Here’s a real situation:

“So … you are asking me if I have worked with important customers before. Well, I definitely have the ability to work hard to earn the trust of my important customers by focusing on the service they receive in order to keep them happy with the business relationship.

FOR EXAMPLE, at my last job I was brought in to work with a disgruntled and very important customer after one of my work colleagues left. The service the customer was receiving was getting worse and he was very close to taking his business elsewhere. Although it took a lot of hard work, I was able to fix what was wrong by listening to the customer carefully and making sure that we delivered exactly what was expected of us. It took a while, but I was able to rescue the relationship with this important client. Does that make sense? OK. Does that answer your question?”

“FOR EXAMPLE” is the most important phrase in your job interview arsenal. Use it frequently as a part of the answer to every question!

Before you go to the interview ensure you have numerous examples of where you resolve problems, used your skills and knowledge.

The more examples you can provide of specific instances where you have demonstrated the characteristics the job description is looking for, the more likely you will be hired.
