So, you hate your job and you are looking for strategies to survive. Or maybe, you don’t really hate your job; it’s just that you frequently find your mind wandering at times—like every minute of the day. Maybe you are at your wits’ end. How will you get through another week without losing your mind? Hey, don’t feel bad, most people are in the same boat; studies show that very few people just love their jobs. So what do you do now; are you stuck being bored and unhappy at work every day for the rest of your life? It’s possible, but all is not lost. Let’s discuss a few strategies for successfully living through the employment blues. Not all of these strategies will work for you. Every job is different and every employee has different reasons for not getting the most out of their job. Face it, some jobs really are awful, and some employers really are as grasping, selfish, and slack-witted as those bosses in the Sunday funny papers. So make sure that you try the methods that you feel most comfortable with, and hopefully before long you will be loving (or at least liking) your job!

5 Stars Everything you should know about landing a job
Mr. Greer’s breakdown of the “Seven Key Career Questions” should be the foundation for anyone hunting for a job. Whether you are just starting a career, or looking for the next step to take, Mr. Greer’s book provides readers with the insider’s guide to everything you need to know. Particularly important is his emphasis on the details, such as making sure your resume is readable and professional. Filled with anecdotes, examples, and invaluable information, “The Executive Rules” is a must-have for anyone looking for a job. It would certainly make a great gift for any recent grad.

5 Stars The most effective Management Job Search book I’ve read
First off, this guy knows what he is talking about. This isn’t some general job hunting advice book. Greer uses his experience in management recruiting and gives an inside track on how to get a high paying position in the absolute quickest time. The information in this book covers in depth nearly all aspects of the management/sales seekers employment process and provides direct and to-the-point strategies that will get your resume read by the decision makers.

The major thesis is that the job search is a process, and while there are many things you can’t control, you can control your process and execute on your strategy to maximize your probability for a positive outcome, and more importantly, minimize wasted effort and costly time. This is a straight forward, to the point, no holds barred examination of the best and most practical process to find and get a job as quickly as possible.

T. Greer has done an excellent job laying out the blueprint for an effective search that includes everything from who should write your resume, to interviewing, to what and what not to say and do when effecting a transition from your current job.

I was employed in three months in a great job. I highly recommend taking the time to get real about your job search.

5 Stars Very Helpful
This is a wonderful read with tremendous amounts of hardcore advice that we should all take to heart. Mr. Greer gives you the unabated version of what most successful recruiters look for in a candidate. I keep a copy of this in my home office and I reference it often. After reading this book I ended up getting my dream job and I think it has also helped me to be a better employee. This is a must read!!!!

5 Stars Worked for me!
This guy is a straight-shooter. He tells it like it is, and those who take heed WILL get results. I love that this book is filled with real-life examples. I had already paid http://www.RiseSmart.com to professionally write my resume and help me track down six-figure jobs. Then, when I added Thad Greer’s advice to my game plan, I landed my first executive job within about three months.

5 Stars The Executive Rules… A MUST READ for today’s Job seekers
Wow..The Executive Rules does RULE on how to land that top job. Anyone thinking about changing employment or needing information on how to find an executive position must read this great book. I give it 5+ stars.

5 Stars Acing the interview
Most informative and helpful book, I recommend this book to anyone looking for any job. Halina R.

5 Stars Excellent Book and Interviewing Advice
Interviewing is one of the most stressful things a person can do. I have been out of the workforce for 3 years. My children are grown and I decided to go back into the field of Administrative Secretary or Executive Assistant. Something I have always enjoyed and never got bored. Just being off the market for only 3 years, there were so many things that had changed about interviewing and I was extremely nervous about this. Of course all this information was coming from my family and friends. I know they all meant well, but I needed an expert. While searching on Amazon, I came across the book by Tony Beshara, “Acing the Interview.” After reading this book, I have never felt the confidence in myself that I feel right now about going on a professional interview. I didn’t even feel this relaxed 10 years ago. Tony Beshara’s book is absolutely easy reading, down to earth and straight to the core of what you need to know about interviewing. I would recommend this book to anyone that is struggling with the thought of going on an interview, whether you have been out of work awhile or just ready for a change.

Sincerely,

5 Stars Excellent advice!
Going on job interviews is among the most stressful life events (tied with divorce, according to one survey). Beshara’s plan is air-tight in terms of getting (and keeping) jobseekers pumped up about their job search. Optimism is everything, and Beshara delivers!

5 Stars Do Yourself A Favor, and Read This Book
In my opinion, this is the kind of book that should be given out in every university on graduation day in addition to diplomas and the optimistic fanfare. Since I left my own university life many years ago, I have consistently wrestled with understanding the complex job hunting and interviewing process required of anyone interested in forging their own professional path. My strategy up to this point has unfortunately relied on the “Wing-and-a-Prayer” method, which, after reading Tony Beshara’s book, I see was a significant mistake I’m now working to correct. One of the most important concepts he expresses, and one I have not seen in many other books I’ve read on this topic, is the idea of taking the emotion out of the search. Rejection is a standard part of this process, and one that causes most people to stop looking at all. Beshara’s point is that job hunting is nothing but one big numbers game. Once you can understand that, you empower yourself to weather the heavy storm of criticism and obstacles you will encounter along the way to finding a well-paid and satisfying position on the stepping stones of building a career. Taking the emotion out of this endeavor leaves you with a process that will ultimately get you what you want with less emotional anchor dragging behind and slowing down your forward motion. As Beshara says, “Pay attention to the process, and the results will take care of itself.” For the first time in my working history I no longer feel afraid of what I must face in landing my next position. I think you will discover this book to be equally engaging and profoundly illuminating. Good luck with your own search. I know Tony Beshara’s book will give you exactly the right tools you are looking for to reach your professional destination as quickly as possible.

5 Stars Acing the Interview
The title Acing the Interview doesn’t really describe the breadth of knowledge Tony Beshara communicates in his latest book. If one does not venture to the Table of Contents, the book’s cover tagline stating its inclusion of “450 Sample Questions” sounds very much like a dozen other self-help books for job seekers. But make no mistake, Tony is not pandering to the insecurities of those suffering from interview phobia with a warmed over collection of typical interview questions. As in his first book, “The Job Search Solution,” Tony wants you to look inside yourself, and to question the common precepts about the job search process. Tony’s “questions” include those you ask yourself and those you ask the employer, in addition to the questions asked of you in the interview.

Tony leverages his experience from interviewing more than 24,000 candidates in a 30-year career to make you understand that `acing the interview’ is more about the research, planning, and practice you execute before the interview than it is about regurgitating rote answers in the interview.

Acing the Interview is a very strong sophomore performance from the acknowledged King of Recruiters. Those who viewed any of Tony’s appearances on the Dr. Phil Show will recognize his conversational tone and sincere passionate concern for matching employers to employees. Not many recruiters can claim more than 6,700 placements in their career. Unlike most authors in this genre, who have very little, if any, real world experience in getting a job – Tony has done it, and is still doing it, every day.

“For thousands of Americans Shoya Zichy’s landmark 276 page masterpiece, “Career Match” may have simultaneously squelched the wretched specter of unemployment and brought career satisfaction to those who sing the blues at a time when their nation’s economy has been sporting a historically rosy complexion…The most compelling reason for reading this book and why we are bringing it to the attention of TravelSmart readers is that “Career Match” makes it easier for anyone who wants to squeeze the most out of their life experience to do just that. That’s why I bought copies for each of my children (all over 40 now). If they can get as much out of the book as I did they’ll be grateful for the rest of their lives. ”

Quick, targeted approach. Just the right amount of information. Let’s you get to the bottom line quickly and then provides additional reading to expand on the personal analysis.

This is an enjoyable, well-written book. But basically, it is just a twist on personality type. Instead of using the usual 4-letter Myers-Briggs types, like INTP, it gives you a color for your personality. This is an enjoyable way to think of yourself, but it is just another career book with a cute idea for the casual career seeker. If you want to have a career that is going to give you a high-level of success and satisfaction, you are going to dig deeper than this book. I use three books with my clients, who are people very seriously committed to picking the right career. The first is Do What You Are: Discover the Perfect Career for You Through the Secrets of Personality Type. This book has been around for a few years and is still the best book on personality type and work. I highly recommend it and consider it much more useful than Career Match.

By far the most powerfully useful career design books are by the man who created the field of career coaching back in the early 1980s, when the word coaching was otherwise just used for sports. Nicholas Lore founded Rockport Institute, probably the best career coaching service for people seeking the perfect career, and invented many of the leading-edge tools and methods in his field. He says to have both success and fulfillment, you need to choose work that fits you naturally. Books like Career Match focus on your personality, but Lore says that is not enough. You also have to understand your natural talents, what functions you do naturally and easily, what subject matter would be interesting enough, how important is it to you to have a purpose, a mission or make a difference and some other areas you want to get right, or, like many, you may feel you have chosen the wrong career.

His first book, The Pathfinder: How to Choose or Change Your Career for a Lifetime of Satisfaction and Success is probably the best career design guide ever written. It takes you through choosing the perfect career for you from beginning to end. Read some of the review of it and you will see that many others agree with me. His new book, Now What?: The Young Person’s Guide to Choosing the Perfect Career is for people under 30, students and people fairly new to the career world. The author knows his audience. Many people under 30 want their reading fast, lean and to the point. More straightforward and streamlined, than The Pathfinder, it doesn’t have as much depth on some important subjects such as what to do when you get stuck, how to make the best decisions. But it is completely practical and designed to turn you into a career detective, observing what you do best and uncovering the best clues about what would make a career fit you perfectly.

I recommend you get all three of these excellent books. After all, picking your career could be the most important decision you will ever make. Most people just put up with their work. Don’t let that happen to you! If you have already decided on your career direction, the old classic What Color Is Your Parachute? 2009: A Practical Manual for Job-Hunters and Career-Changers is, I think, the best job hunting book but not so good for picking a fitting career.

5 Stars The best assessment I’ve found, and the easiest!
As a Career Consultant for the past 14 years, I deal with assessment instruments all the time. Shoya Zichy’s “Career Match” is simply the best one I’ve found: it’s the easiest to administer and score (the questions take 10 minutes to answer), the results are unerringly correct, and all the information provided based upon the results is comprehensive and totally useful. Plus, it doesn’t resort to psycho-babble, and it doesn’t need “professional” interpretation, so anyone can pick it up and immediately benefit from it. Cheers to Shoya Zichy and her co-author for putting together a completely enjoyable and marvelously helpful book!

5 Stars Great, quick guide
Great guide that can quickly give you insightful information about yourself. It is nice because you do not have to read the entire book, just

the parts that apply to you. Easy to use.

The most rewarding employment comes when an individual is able to combine both interest and skills. The author not only illustrates typical history-related jobs, but also explores areas that interact well with history–the performing arts, sales, several of the sciences, and construction, to name just a few. An excellent resource for those looking for variety and flexibility in a career selection. Appendixes list living-history museums, National Park Service regional offices, associations, and further reading. Kathy Bonnar

User Ratings and Reviews

1 Star A Complete Waste of Time and Paper
It is fascinating what authors, editors and publishers think they can pass off as a “reference” or a “guide” and how little regard they have for readers’ common sense. This book is little more than an outline for a class or seminar without the student participation. In fact, the information is so bare-boned that it demonstrates the author would hardly have enough expertise to actually teach such a class or seminar. History majors, beware: even if your college has a poor placement program, it will still have covered more than this book.Clearly an assigned project in which the author indiscriminately listed every resource stumbled upon, the acknowledgements and interviews still take up more pages than the resources. Practical advice is dispensed with a headline and a mere paragraph or two while the interviews are banal and bland. The most offensive appendix listing: the author’s own web site where she’ll “help” teach you the steps towards getting your fiction published! She seems to specialize in subjects which simply cannot be taught. The reader should take the author’s own advice from page 9: “Don’t forget the Internet…fire up any search engine and enter key words such as ‘history,’ ‘jobs,’ ‘museums,’ ‘curators,’ and so on. A well-defined search will bring you to some interesting and helpful websites.” Better yet, skip the insult of having paid for this book entirely and go directly online; it’ll prove much more informative.

4 Stars Some good ideas
This book gives you a good place to start investigating careers if you have a background in history. It can point you in directions you may not have thought of.

1 Star Really quite disappointing
Very Nearly Useless would be a great title for this book. It is quite inconsistent and poorly balanced-some chapters are composed entirely of anecdotes and interviews, with no practical information whatsoever, while others are no more than dry lists of steps involved in pursuing the career in question. (there are a few chapters slightly more informative than the rest, in which some practical information seems to have been accidently sprinkled amongst the anecdotes.)

The author’s approach to the reading audience is also off-kilter; most chapters seem to assume the reader is a mature individual already in possession of a lucrative and well-established career who is merely looking for a change of pace. Only the chapter on archaeology seems directed at students-and it is addressed entire at students. One would suppose from this text that it is quite impossible to pursue a career in archaeology (or museum studies) unless one begins as an undergraduate at a tender age.

The most outrageous thing about this book is the inclusion of minimum wage interships and unpaid volunteer jobs among the “careers”. To my mind, a career by definition must support the person performing in it. Volunteering or minimum wage jobs may be useful experience-gaining activities in pursuit of a career, but that was not how they were presented in the text.

Anything substantive this book might have to say could be found online-including anecdotes from people in the careers in question (eg. in chat rooms, on posting boards.) Save your money.

Opportunities in Physician Assistant Careers offers you essential information about a variety of careers available assisting medical personnel and includes training and education requirements, salary statistics, and professional and Internet resources.

User Ratings and Reviews

4 Stars Excellent overview of what a PA is
If you are curious about the physician assistant profession, this book takes you through the life of a PA. This walks you through the profession from the view of a student and professionals in a variety of different fields.

2 Stars Not what I expected…
I mainly got this book for the salary statistics, which totaled about two sentences in the book. You can find more, better, and less-dated information for free on the internet.

3 Stars rudimentary overview
This is a short, simple overview of the PA profession that is worth the used book price. It reads more like a long magazine article than a book, for some reason. Anyone needing a nice quick introduction to the job will be satisfied with this book, although it’s out of date. The many people interviewed seem to all be from Chicago, which is unusual, and also most got their education several years ago when there were literally dozens of different ways to become a PA. Modern day applicants will find many of the loosey-goosey programs of the past are now traditional masters programs just like any other. The old “I worked with a doctor for a few years and they let me sit for the boards” type of story is history, nothing more. Most of the content is just published questionnaires and personal short essays from respondents, without commentary or context by the author who seems to have no real personal knowledge of the profession. He might as well have been writing about the history of the bicycle or how air conditioning has changed our lives. But if you are just starting out and need a quick look at the job, this isn’t a bad place to start.

1 Star Only buy this book if you know nothing about PAs
This book is filled with insanely obvious “insights” such as

–consider commuting to school rather than living on campus to save money and

–talk with practicing physician assistants to learn more.

Don’t waste your money unless you need the obvious drawn out in torturous detail.
