Pretty standard fare, you might be thinking. You’ve heard these tips numerous times. But have you considered what they mean and how important they really are? If not, here are some reasons to do so for each one.

Not-So-Secret Secret #1:  Put Your Best Foot Forward

The wording here is a bit odd. It implies that we have three or more feet. It would make more sense and be grammatically correct to say: “Put your better foot forward.” But knowing what it means is what really matters: To start on a journey or task with purpose and gusto. In other words walk into your interview with a determined step, a smile on your face, a friendly handshake, and expectancy in your mind and heart. Be your best self and trust that your authenticity will compel the interviewer to take a good look at YOU, in person and on paper.

Not-So-Secret Secret #2:  Make a Good First Impression

It has been said again and again that the first impression is the last impression. How can that be true? People judge one another by what they see and hear first. It stays with them, regardless of what happens next. So it’s worth your time to express your true self rather than to try to impress with affectation and showmanship. Hiring managers are looking for authentic individuals who are honest, open-faced, quick to smile and shake hands firmly, ask intelligent questions, and speak openly about their qualifications for the job in question. Be positive and optimistic. Show your appreciation for the opportunity, get to the point of how you can benefit the company with your skill set, and avoid throwing verbal stones at previous employers or co-workers.

Not-So-Secret Secret #3: Look Your Interviewer in the Eye

You’ve probably heard the saying, “The eyes are the windows to the soul.” And you know it’s true when you encounter other people. Our eyes sometimes say more than our words. So when you’re in an interview, look the hiring manager in the eye. Listen and focus on what he or she is saying. And when it’s your turn to respond, hold your gaze and avoid distracting gestures such as playing with coins in your pocket or flicking your fingernails. One way to lose points fast is to look over the interviewer’s shoulder or glance around the room or stare at the floor when you and he or she are engaged in conversation.

The next time you’re preparing for a job interview, review these three not-so-secret secrets, put them into practice, and the wait for those three magic words, “WOW…You’re Hired!”

Interviewing is one of the most stressful things a person can do. I have been out of the workforce for 3 years. My children are grown and I decided to go back into the field of Administrative Secretary or Executive Assistant. Something I have always enjoyed and never got bored. Just being off the market for only 3 years, there were so many things that had changed about interviewing and I was extremely nervous about this. Of course all this information was coming from my family and friends. I know they all meant well, but I needed an expert. While searching on Amazon, I came across the book by Tony Beshara, “Acing the Interview.” After reading this book, I have never felt the confidence in myself that I feel right now about going on a professional interview. 5 Stars Do Yourself A Favor, and Read This Book
In my opinion, this is the kind of book that should be given out in every university on graduation day in addition to diplomas and the optimistic fanfare. Since I left my own university life many years ago, I have consistently wrestled with understanding the complex job hunting and interviewing process required of anyone interested in forging their own professional path. My strategy up to this point has unfortunately relied on the “Wing-and-a-Prayer” method, which, after reading Tony Beshara’s book, I see was a significant mistake I’m now working to correct. One of the most important concepts he expresses, and one I have not seen in many other books I’ve read on this topic, is the idea of taking the emotion out of the search. Rejection is a standard part of this process, and one that causes most people to stop looking at all. Beshara’s point is that job hunting is nothing but one big numbers game. Once you can understand that, you empower yourself to weather the heavy storm of criticism and obstacles you will encounter along the way to finding a well-paid and satisfying position on the stepping stones of building a career. Taking the emotion out of this endeavor leaves you with a process that will ultimately get you what you want with less emotional anchor dragging behind and slowing down your forward motion. As Beshara says, “Pay attention to the process, and the results will take care of itself.” For the first time in my working history I no longer feel afraid of what I must face in landing my next position. I think you will discover this book to be equally engaging and profoundly illuminating. Good luck with your own search. The title Acing the Interview doesn’t really describe the breadth of knowledge Tony Beshara communicates in his latest book. If one does not venture to the Table of Contents, the book’s cover tagline stating its inclusion of “450 Sample Questions” sounds very much like a dozen other self-help books for job seekers. But make no mistake, Tony is not pandering to the insecurities of those suffering from interview phobia with a warmed over collection of typical interview questions. As in his first book, “The Job Search Solution,” Tony wants you to look inside yourself, and to question the common precepts about the job search process. Tony’s “questions” include those you ask yourself and those you ask the employer, in addition to the questions asked of you in the interview.

Tony leverages his experience from interviewing more than 24,000 candidates in a 30-year career to make you understand that `acing the interview’ is more about the research, planning, and practice you execute before the interview than it is about regurgitating rote answers in the interview.

Acing the Interview is a very strong sophomore performance from the acknowledged King of Recruiters. “A job search is always a mind game,” says independent career counselor Cathy Severson of Santa Barbara, California. “You don’t know if this is going to be a sprint or a marathon. Assume it will be a marathon, and you’ll be pleasantly surprised if it’s a sprint.”

But it’s easy to lose stamina — and motivation — especially in this economy. Watch for these stamina killers and their solutions:

Stamina-Killer #1: Ignoring Feelings

Been laid off? “You may feel confused, ashamed, even depressed,” says Anne Perschel, president of Germane Consulting and an organizational psychologist who coaches executives and helps employees change careers. It’s natural. But letting it fester will destroy your momentum.

“Job loss is probably one of the top three stressors in life,” she says. “It affects your identity and your sense of value. When you have days where you feel down, make small steps toward your goal.”

Stamina-Killer #2: Job or Bust

If the goal is just to land the job, you’re setting yourself up to fail every day you don’t get a job offer, says Severson.

“You never know when an offer is going to appear,” she says. “When the focus shifts to the actual tasks, the job searcher feels a greater sense of control and is better able to handle the long haul.”

Try these switches:

• Instead of “I will get a job in X field this year,” try “I will send out five resumes this week.”
• Instead of “I will have three job interviews this month,” try “I will call five people for informational interviews today.”

Stamina-Killer #3: Applying for Every Job

It’s tempting to up your odds of an interview by applying for any job for which you’re remotely qualified. Avoid that trap, says Perschel.

“[Job interviewers] will know you’re not a good fit for the job” if you apply for anything, she says. “You’ll get more rejections, fewer responses, and more negative feedback.” Your momentum will wane.

Stamina-Killer #4: Negative People and Information

“How do you feel after you talk to each person in your life — drained or energized?” asks Severson.

Apply that question across the board and you’ll know what — and who — is sapping your energy so you can avoid them. Talk about your job hunt with only the most energizing friends, family members and colleagues, and seek out positive acquaintances.

The same goes for news: If you’re paralyzed after reading or watching the news, avoid it. You can always go back to it when you feel stronger.

Stamina-Killer #5: Pursuing Work You Don’t Love

If you’re going after the same old work, it’ll be harder to keep trying every day. Banish mediocrity and seek out the work you’re passionate about.

Not only will it keep you going, says Perschel, but also it has a surprise bonus: It increases your chance of landing that dream job.

“Assume there are other people out there who have the same skills,” says Perschel. “But that energy, commitment, and passion? It can be your real differentiator.”
