So, you hate your job and you are looking for strategies to survive. Or maybe, you don’t really hate your job; it’s just that you frequently find your mind wandering at times—like every minute of the day. Maybe you are at your wits’ end. How will you get through another week without losing your mind? Hey, don’t feel bad, most people are in the same boat; studies show that very few people just love their jobs. So what do you do now; are you stuck being bored and unhappy at work every day for the rest of your life? It’s possible, but all is not lost. Let’s discuss a few strategies for successfully living through the employment blues. Not all of these strategies will work for you. Every job is different and every employee has different reasons for not getting the most out of their job. Face it, some jobs really are awful, and some employers really are as grasping, selfish, and slack-witted as those bosses in the Sunday funny papers. So make sure that you try the methods that you feel most comfortable with, and hopefully before long you will be loving (or at least liking) your job!

How to Write a Reference Letter: 5 Vital Tips In Writing An Persuasive Reference Letter
By Michael Lee

Knowing how to write a reference letter for someone can be a daunting task. After all, you know that it plays a big part in that person’s chance of getting accepted. Luckily, this article is here to provide you with tips on how to write a persuasive reference letter that will leave people satisfied.

1) How do you know the person in question?

Here’s the first vital step on how to write a reference letter – it is important to state your relationship with the candidate – how you know him or her. Are you a teacher, a colleague or even a former supervisor?

It is also important that you indicate how long you have known that person. There’s a big difference in knowing a person for three months and knowing a person for three years.

2) Back up positives with specifics.

Even if you sing praises about the candidate, having no specific example to back them up will do you no good. Perhaps it is a wise idea to ask for a list of the person’s accomplishments (in case you don’t remember any). This is a tremendous plus in any reference letter.

3) Don’t write anything negative.

Not everyone is perfect. However, that should not be reflected in your reference letter at all. Stick to the positives and let the candidate answer for his or her weaknesses during his or her interview with the employer.

Listing the person’s not-so-brilliant qualities might only prevent him or her from getting short-listed.

4) Separation is key.

When knowing how to write a reference letter, you must recognize what separates the candidate from the rest of the applicants.

This is one of the more crucial points of the letter that employers really want to know. Write down characteristics that make the person stand out (in a positive way) from the rest.

5) Proofread.

When writing a reference letter, it is highly important that the message contain no typographical or grammatical errors. One single misplaced vowel can have dire consequences for the candidate.

Being asked to write a reference letter is really an honor. And it’s easy to know how. It shows that the person in question has a profound respect of your opinion. It is only polite that you do your best to write it well.

Every once in a while I’ll publish job-hunt questions people ask me a lot. And it’s that time again. But today I’m publishing a question that stumped me:

“Why don’t interviewers get back to me after the interview? I go to the interview, I feel like we click, and the hiring manager or human resource representative never says another thing to me again. Ever.”

I sent this question to my well-placed, hot-shot human resource friend who works at a company that a slew of you want to work for but cannot be named in this blog, and this is what he told me about the issue:

The primary reason candidates don’t hear back after the interview is that most recruiters and/or interviewers don’t shut the discussion down when they know it’s a non-fit. This is rooted in human nature and avoiding conflict.

For example, two weeks ago I interviewed a terrible candidate. I spoke with him for a half-hour, and then told him, “You know what? I have to be honest with you that I’m going to pursue other candidates who appear more highly suited for this role. I want to be transparent about that because I know you may have other job opportunities you are considering, and I want to be up front that compared to other candidates I’m considering, they appear to be more strongly suited for the role.”

Most people won’t have that conversation in the moment, and instead say, “Thanks for your time, I have some more people to interview, and then I’ll get back to you with the decision on whether we’ll be moving forward.” This closing remark creates more work and clutter, and then the “getting back to them” never happens.

By not being transparent, the interviewer feigns that there will be more evaluation, and I believe interviewers think that it makes the eventual turn-down more palatable. But in all honesty, it just creates inefficiency and friction in the system.

Another way to look at this problem though, is that it’s simply poor execution, because the opportunity cost of letting people dangle doesn’t have to be absorbed by the interviewer. Example: If you interview with me, what are the consequences for me treating you poorly? Not any really. You as the candidate don’t want to burn a bridge lest [my company] should happen to call you in the future, so it’s not like you are going to take me to task.

In the mix of hundreds of candidates in process, there’s no clear measurement of what is really going on, unless you write a letter to my boss or blog about it (which few people take the time to do).

So what can you conclude from this? The people who get back to you and tell you flat out no, or, better yet, are transparent enough to tell you no right there in the interview, are the people who are the best to work for. And that’s not helpful, is it? I mean, they are rejecting you. So what are you going to do with that piece of knowledge?

Here’s an idea for candidates in the post-interview process. How about sending a thank you note, placing a followup call or two to show interest, and then if you don’t hear anything, move on?

And instead of spending time whining about how rude the interview process is, focus on turning the next interview into a job offer. If you get good at interviews, you don’t have to worry about people who don’t let you know about rejection because you won’t get rejected.

Managing employees at the workplace can be a challenging process. But what do you do when you are suddenly promoted and some of the employees you are managing are also your friends?

Here are 7 quick tips that will help you manoeuvre your way around this potential minefield:

1. Lay down the ground rules right from the start. Speak to each one of your friends privately and inform them that friends or not, business is still business. Inform them you expect them to continue to work, as they have been; professional at all times. Keep your tone pleasant but firm, and let them know that they are still required to follow the rules just like everybody else.

2. Treat your friends the same as the other employees. No better, no worse. If you don’t, the other employees will take notice that you’re showing favoritism and you will quickly lose their respect.

3. Don’t have lunch or take breaks with your friends too often, unless other employees are also included in the group. Remember, people are watching and appearances are everything. Others will think you are sharing confidential ‘secrets’ and company / knowledge.

4. When evaluating your friends for raises and/or promotions, make sure the aforementioned raises and promotions are warranted and based solely on job performance, not friendship.

5. Do not discuss other employee’s behaviour or performance with your friends at any time.

6. Outside of the workplace, do not discuss job-related issues with your friends.

7. At office parties, celebrations, etc., be aware of seating assignments. Do not associate solely with your friends. Again, make sure other employees are included in the group.

As you can see, managing your friends can be quite a balancing act. However, remember to treat all employees equally and you will be respected.

I had an email today that brought back the information from a post I did years ago called, How to Interview Potential Employers. If you are seeking a job or if you interview people for jobs, check it out.

Also, I have a free e-book download called, Interviewer’s Secrets Revealed here.

I do a lot of interviewing for jobs at all levels of the organization and I am still amazed at the LACK of good questions I get from candidates. Making a bad job decision is a major thing, so it seems to me that candidates would want to check out the company and hiring manager very thoroughly.

But I guess it depends on your situation, right? If you are gainfully employed, perhaps you can be pickier than if you are unemployed and worried about paying the mortgage. That said, I get few good questions from employed people.

How do you make the decision that a job is right for you? How important is the fit with the company and hiring manager? If important, do you ask lots of questions or do you go with your gut – with chemistry.

I value chemistry a lot, but still ask lots of questions.

Oh, and here is a list of interview questions I like for middle managers and above on the org chart (This is my latest list):

1. Each member of a leadership team brings unique strengths and weaknesses. For the last/current leadership team you belonged to:
A. Describe the team – size, members
B. What unique skills and talents did you bring to the team BEYOND your functional knowledge?
C. In what ways did you rely on other team members for coaching and advice?

2. What are the key reasons for your success?

3. Describe a time that you asserted yourself at a regular leadership team meeting. What was the situation? What did you say? What were the results?

4. Describe the two contributions you made in the last year that you are most proud of. How have these contributions helped the organization?

5. Beyond your functional projects and tasks, in what ways have you helped the company improve it’s ability to manage, execute and react to change?

6. Tell me about a peer that you have the most difficulty working with? What made it difficult? What did you do about it? What were the results?

7. If we were to ask your current/last peers and manager to describe the greatest strengths you brought to the company, what do you think they would say? Why?

8. Over the next two years, how would you like to grow as a leader?

9. Over the last year, what was the largest problem you were faced with solving? How did you approach it? What did you do? What were the results?

10. Describe your leadership and management style. How do you approach ensuring everyone on your team is working on the right stuff? How do you communicate? What is your belief about what makes people perform their best? Describe your direct reports in terms of each person’s, strengths, weaknesses, and how you managed each to perform their best.

11. As a member of the senior team, you need to communicate fully but appropriately with your teams, peers, and managers. How would you approach this responsibility? What, if anything, should be off limits? What do team members need to know and what do peers and managers need to know?

12. Tell me about the staff meetings you called? What was the focus? Who ran the meetings?

13. Selecting and developing a strong team is important. What do you look for when selecting a talented professional (other than the needed functional skills)? Tell me about a hiring success and a hiring failure and what you learned from each.

14. How do you approach ensuring everyone on your team is working on the right stuff? How do you communicate what’s most important? What is your belief about what makes people perform their best work?

15. Tell me about your hot buttons. What stresses you out or frustrates you?

16. Which areas of your work have been criticized most over the years? By whom? Why?

17. Based on what you know so far, what’s the good, the bad, and the ugly of this position?

Before we entered into this historic recession, it was easy to leave a job you didn’t love. All you had to do was knock on the door of another employer and you could begin work the next week. Those days are gone and most likely will not return anytime soon. But that doesn’t mean you have to be miserable in the job that you have.

Here are some tips on how to love the job you have:

Be Realistic

No one’s life is perfect. Not even the lives of people who star on those sitcoms you watch. It is OK to have a bad day, week or even month at work. Just be sure the good days are far outweighing the bad.

Be Positive

Focus on what is going well at the office. Is your work still challenging? Could a promotion be in your future? Do you enjoy the people you work with? A “yes” to any of these questions means you have positive energy you can build upon.

Clear the Air

Sometimes it is one issue or person that makes a great job a not-so-great situation. If this is the case, then it is time to clear the air. Write down some examples of how this situation is impacting your ability to perform at an optimal level. Then share your findings with the person or people who are involved.

Don’t Believe Everything People Say

It is human nature to boast or even exaggerate a bit. People around you may be saying they love their jobs, but in reality they may be in the same position as you: waiting for the next best thing to come along. Take what people are saying about their jobs with a grain of salt and focus on your own happiness.

This Doesn’t Have to Be Forever

Right now it may feel like you have no choice but to keep this job forever. However, this won’t be the case if you play your cards right. Use this recession as an opportunity to increase your options. Enroll in evening or online classes, volunteer to work on projects with high visibility and gain the experience you will need to move to a new place in your career. Who knows, this may just be the spark you need to reignite the flames of love again in the job you have.

Get a Life

Enjoying your work should only be one part of having a life that you love. If your job is the only thing that brings joy to your life, then perhaps it is time to focus on having a life outside of work. Look for opportunities to participate in activities that are of interest to you. Volunteer, take up a new sport or get a hobby. These are all great ways to build a life that you can love.
